Why is Sony a Hacker Target?
« on: June 04, 2011, 05:18:16 pm »
It's not such a happy time over at Sony these days thanks to the bull's-eye on its back.

But why is Sony -- a major player in the worlds of gaming, movies and music -- suddenly in the crosshairs of hackers?

Sony's reputation for aggressively trying to protect its intellectual property rights may provide some clues.

Purdue University security expert Gene Spafford, who testified before Congress about Sony's security problems, said there are plenty of examples. He cited Sony banning users who modded their PlayStations, the infamous case of installing "rootkits" on PCs of users as copy control for CD, and lawsuits it has filed against the likes of George Hotz and Jammie Thomas.

Hotz, a hacker known for unlocking the iPhone, riled up Sony when he started a blog to document his progress hacking the PlayStation 3, which was regarded as being a locked and secure system. Thomas got caught up in a music piracy case, accused by the recording industry of sharing songs on the file-sharing site Kazaa.

Well.. I'm possibly one of the biggest anti-S**y people you'll come across, but this is not a good thing at all.
Some have even suggested that S**y might be allowing this to happen on purpose, just so they can convince their user-base to pay for their online services and help prevent such a thing from happening.

I'm not quite that cynical, but I understand the sentiment.

It's not good news for all the people whose accounts and/or financial details were exposed..

Thanks for that SF :)

Nice article, SF...

I especially love this comment:

Quote
Computer security expert and former hacker Gregory Evans said Sony would be well-served to hire ex-hackers instead of IT managers to help secure its networks.

The whole thing with Sony is a joke.  I absolutely disagree with their decision to remove OtherOS, but that doesn't make it okay for someone to share.  After all, it's only fair for them to want to protect themselves from piracy.  Everyone knows by now that with the way licensing works, Sony has the right to make whatever changes to the machine they deem necessary because they still own the software.  Geohotz is seen as some kind of hero because he made piracy ten times easier, but Sony obviously isn't going to let that fly.  And as a result, all of their customers get screwed...far more than the company itself (their sales are UP).

Sadly, Sony wasn't the end of it.  Other subsidiaries have been attacked, as well as Square Enix, Codemasters, and others in the gaming industry.  These companies have awful protection and we unfortunately have to suffer as a result because these self-righteous "hackers" think they're owed something.  What really gets me is that they try to act like they're doing it for US, like they're heroes of the people.  In reality, they're ruining gaming and the internet for many people.
Actually, the name is Chris...

Agreed with CB.
Having the ability to show a weakness in a company's site, does not negate responsibility on the part of the 'hacker'.
A thief showing the world that your local bank doesn't lock up shop, is still a thief...
